Mencia Finca Os Cobatos 2016
Finca OS Cobatos is one of the most modern wineries in the region and perfectly equipped to make stunningly wines. The estate is situated in the cool far north corner of the Iberian Peninsula immediately to the north of Portugal.
Planted in the early 1980’s, the vineyard is one of the oldest in Monterrei, encompassing ten hectares planted to the white grape Godello and the red grape Mencia. The vineyard soils are made up of sedimentary soils, which contain a mix of clay, quartz and sand. The average yield is approximately 52hl/ha. The vineyard benefits from a high average of sunny days and is the driest appellation in Galicia. Situated at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level, the warm growing period is tempered by cold Autumns due the cooling influence of the Atlantic.
The grapes were harvested at optimum maturity and the high quality grapes were carefully selected. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, to maintain the purity of fruit of the Mencia variety. This was followed by three months maturation in new American and French Allier oak barrels of 225 litres, which added oak complexity to the final wine.
Round and smooth with the black fruit aromatics and freshness of the Mencia grape, being perfectly balanced by savoury vanilla oak.
