ABOUT THE WINE MAKER
For generations the Altés family have been grape growers, owning and farming vineyards around the village of Batea. Today, this family estate is run by Núria Altés and the 30 hectares of vineyards which have been in the family for over 100 years supply the fruit for her winery. Until recently, the grapes were sold to the co-operative in Batea, where Núria was the commercial manager, but this didn’t seem quite right to her, as she explains, ‘I wanted to give the grapes their own personality.’
Whilst Núria’s wine company is very young, the key vineyard that provides the grapes for her top white wine is nearly a century old. Benufet was planted in 1915 and believed to be one of the oldest plantings of Garnacha Blanca in the world; it was the quality of the grapes that came from the Benufet vineyard, amongst others, that convinced Núria to make these wines.
Batea, with its Roman and Moorish history, is situated in Terra Alta in the south-western corner of Catalunya; the land is high, about 450 metres above sea level and benefits from cool nights; the warm climate is also tempered by maritime influences due to the proximity of the sea. Whilst Terra Alta has not yet developed a large following, it is a region with a large number of vineyards, many of which populated by gnarly, old, Garnacha (called Garnatxa in Catalunya) bush vines.
